Merry Christmas from the land of White-tailed Deer and Wolf;
where Eagles nest and Ravens crow,
where Beaver swims beneath the icy crust of lakes,
and Otter slides down slopes of snow.
Merry Christmas from Man’s best friend,
from the land where Marten and Fisher ramble along Jack Pine bough,
where Moose and Elk trod marsh and slough.
Merry Christmas from the land of Wild Rice and Maple Sugar,
the solitary Porcupine eating tree bark,
and the Snowshoe Hare.
Merry Christmas from Black Bear sleeping in his den,
and Ajidamo,
from Lumberjack and Chickadee.
Merry Christmas from The Anishinabeg.
Merry Christmas from Red Lake!
And to you and yours…. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and musings. I enjoy them!

Hey Russ! I may have mentioned this before but here it is again – one of my favorite writers is Charles deLint – who lives in Ottawa, Canada. He is considered a fantasy/sci-fi writer and has won numerous awards in that genre. Many of his characters are animal people – Coyote (who always messes things up even with his good intentions); Raven (who made the world); The Crow Girls, Maida and Zia (who have always been even before Raven); Jack Daw, Maggie (a magpie) and Annie (who is also of the corbae family), Jackie (as in Jack and the Giant Killer – who is a human female and eventually becomes the Jack who protects her part of the kingdom)… you see what I mean. These animal people/spirits interact with the world as we know it thru many stories – and, of course, not all are in every story. Some are set in Newford (reminds me of a small town set in upstate New York or?) or a smaller town located in the desert near the southwestern border of the US. So – there are woodlands characters and there are desert characters. The stories are always about those who need friendship, love and loyalty and how lives intertwine. I really think you would love his stories and I think he would enjoy yours as well. BTW – he is also a musician (folk, I think) and plays at a local pub on weekends, so when you’re up that way, maybe you can take a sidetrip and meet him. I have no idea how far Ottawa is from Red Lake, but to my way of thinking – once you’re that far north, hey – why not? PS – he has a facebook page, of course.
Hmmm – another thing to put on my when-I-retire-things-to-do-list. Roadtrip together? Hugs! P
